Wiper Won't Shut Off

On my 88 325iC I accidentally hit the wiper stalk while shutting off the
ignition. The wipers started to run and the washer pump kept pumping.
Shutting the ignition stopped both, but turning on the ignition started
everything again. I thought it could be the switch in the steering column,
but banging on the wiper control in the fuse boxed stopped it. I have not
tried using the wipers again. Has anyone seen this strange behavior?
