'91 325i; pulse in steering. Cause?

I recently had a ball joint replaced (left front) and
changed from winter tires to a new summer set. I'm
felling a pulse -- a gentle-but-obvious cw-ccw-cw
rolling motion in the steering wheel. Anyone know what
the cause might be? Is a wheel alignment indicated by
this phenomenon, or something else?
