Digest or Private?

Hi all,

    I have not subscribed for a couple of years and I just wondered what the
general rule for responding to questions is.  In general should I respond to
the questioners private email, or should I respond to the digest.  When I
subscribed before I enjoyed reading the responses to other peoples
questions, but I don't want to post to the digest if others don't want to
read the responses.
