E28 Gas Mileage

I recently purchased an 87 535is (automatic), overall it's in pretty good 
shape but it has a problem with gas mileage that my mechanic cannot 
identify.  It's had a recent compression test, valve adjustment, and major 
service.  It drives fine, the computer reads about 19 mpg, but it runs 
through a tank of gas in under 150 miles (no unusual driving conditions).  
When I fill up, I check the number of miles driven since the last fill up 
against the amount of gas I put in and it comes to 10 or 11 mpg.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?
