There are a lot of problems with the 92-94 sunroofs, and most are caused
by the cassette mechanism getting worn, the only cure is to replace it
with a 94+ cassette plus the adapter kit, the new design cassette seems
to be completely reliable.
I paid over $400 for the parts.
This is a good piece of information to keep in mind if you are
considering buying an earlier E36. Right after I bought my 92 325i, my
wife reported sunroof problems. It was diagnosed as needing a new
cassette. My plan was to never use the sunroof, and thus never have the
problem, and in hindsight this would have worked had I pulled the fuse.
What happened was my wife couldn't keep herself from demonstrating the
sunroof to her friend, and it got completely stuck in the open position,
and then that was that , the only way to get it closed was to take it
apart and put in the new parts.
The really sad thing is that it is just about impossible to find a used
BMW without a sunroof anymore. When I look in the Roundel classifieds
all the M3's have sunroofs, premium packages, heated seats, and all this
crap that just causes headaches when a car gets older... And these are
the car club members! I need some serious and well heeled enthusiasts
to special order new BMWs without sunroofs and other geegaw gizmo crap,
so I can buy them from them used.
Please!
