Backup Light problem

I am just trying to replace a faulty backup light switch on my '85 635 and beleive it or not I am having trouble! I replaced the old switch with a new one, hooked the two terminals up and now the lights are on in
neutral, with no change going into reverse. I pulled the switch out, connected the two terminals again and operated the switch by hand. ON-OFF, ON-OFF etc.
Put the switch back in and the same thing. Lights on!
Am I not seeing something here, like a case ground??
Can anyone shed light(sic!) on this problem??
