'96 328 heating/cooling control

Recently had the heating/cooling control unit replaced on my 1996 328.  Am now
noticing that when it is set to "auto", the word auto appears in the display. 
For the 4 years I've owned the vehicle, it never did this.  On the old unit, when
set to "auto", the fan speed never exceeded 1/2 fan speed unless manually
incremented.  Now it seems to max out at 3/4 and when increasing the fan speed, the
word "auto" disappears from the display.  Was just curious, is this a revised
unit, or has display never worked properly from the day I purchased the vehicle.
