E12 Transmission

I have a 1978 530i (E12) with automatic transmission and have noticed two 
symptoms that appear related... 1) when going up a hill, downshift seems to 
jump... like it's going from 3rd to 1st instead of smoothly downshifting 
and... 2) when in 2nd, there is a 1-2 second delay before moving forward, 
then seems OK. When in 3rd or 1st, there is no delay.

Is an adjustment needed? Does vaccuum have anything to do with this? Do 
symptoms indicate problem inside transmission? Thanks... Jim
