E28 Trunk latch stuck

Could be the cold, aging or mechanical failure, but while the electric
locking system works fine on my 1988 535i, I can't push in the button to get
the trunk to open. The button moves, but nothing releases.
Anyone got a tactic to get it open. I need the trunk open to put the sand in
it!
