<e34> Engine noise when first started

I have been noticing a strange/funny noise from the engine of my '92
535i 5 speed, almost like the A/C clutch engagement, within 3-5 sec's
after I start up. With the hood up, it sounds like it's coming from
around the fan, water pump, engine front, some where in there.  It's
almost like something mechanical is engaging just after startup. Only
lasts for 1 sec or so. Can this be the chain tensioner? Is it normal or
does something need to be replaced?
