Re: Front shocks '87 325

I have been informed that the front shocks on my 1987 325 are leaking.
However, my BMW mechanic, who I trust, has advised me that the leaking
is not so bad as to require immediate replacement. He suggested
probably this summer would be a good time to replace them. I was quoted
$170.00/ea for Bilstein's. I know that Bilstein's provide a "stiff"
ride. I also called an auto parts shop that specializes in Bavarian
parts, and they recommended Boge shocks, which will also provide a
little "stiffer" ride, but not as stiff as the Bilstein's. The auto
parts individual also advised that these are not the same as the
original factory shocks, they are much better. I checked it out with
another BMW parts supplier, and he concurred with the previous person.
My problem is that the Boge shocks are $70.00/ea. Also, the
installation of the shocks on the vehicle is quite complicated. Does
this vehicle have MacPherson struts? If so, then I guess that it takes
special tools with which to use in order to install the shocks. I would
like your opinion on my dilemma. Am I DOOMED to paying the shop more
coin for the part, which they obviously make a good profit on, and let
them do the installation? My shop only installs Bilstein's, and they
would probably not be too happy if I took down any shocks that I have
purchased from an auto parts store and said, "Hey, would you install
these for me?" What is your take on this dilemma?
