My experience is with E28 but it sounds the same.
There is a relay that the all door switches operate.
There is an additional contact on the drivers outside door handle that
activates the delay every time the door is opened from the outside. This
feeds into the above relay along with ignition or auxiliary supply.
I had problems with this switch which stopped working.
I also think (I could check it out for you) that the delay is cancelled
when you are inside the car and the ignition is switched on.
