Groaning noise in 94 E36

I have a 1994 318iS with 142,000 miles, no major problems since new....well 
hopefully!

While driving to my parents for Thanksgiving, the car developed this noise 
that is best described as a groan.  It only happens when the car is in gear 
and moving.  It is especially noticeable between 40 and 65 mph.

Any thoughts on what this can be and if it would be wise to drive the car 
back home? (350 miles).
