<E12>ECU wires

I have a 1978 530i that I am trying to sell. It runs very rough, probably
fuel problems.
My question is that in monkeying with the car I came across two pigtails
on the ECU above the glove box. In a past post I read that there should
be only one wire, and that disconnecting this would disable the car.
Neither of these 2 wires seems to matter, as the car starts with
eitner/neither/both connected. What is the purpose of these two wires?
