Phillip,

Taking your car to a dealer or a BMW shop is the ideal solution, as they
have a DIS (BMW dealers only) or a MODIC diagnostic system that
specifically actuates the ABS unit during the bleeding procedure.
However, that is not necessary -- you may simply turn the ignition key
to activate the electrical power, before you start pumping (the ABS
light should be on).

P.S. 	(1) Do yourself a favor and buy a Bentley manual for $35 -- much
superior to Haynes.
