OBC - but not as I know it!

The OBC on my '89 325i E30 has suddenly lost it's
display. It's still working in as much as the clock
digits can still be seen very dimmly (as they usually can be
when the ignition is switched off). Also, the l.e.d.'s that
are in some of the OBC button still come on so there's power
getting to the unit. I'd like to remove the OBC in order
to check if there any loose connections/fuses or whatever
that might need fixing - but I can't see how to remove the
thing from the dashboard! I've removed the radio and can
see a clamping screw holding the OBC to the facia panel - but
how the heck do I get the whole thing out without destroying
the panel?
TIA
(Any advice on what might be wrong with the OBC itself gratefully
received)
