V-8 meltdown

I was at the dealer yesterday to have my 740 worked on, and noticed a 740 in
the shop with the intake off the engine. I inspected it closely because I'd
never seen one of the V-8's with the intake off before. I looked around for
the intake and noticed it on the bench and looked inside the plenum and saw
a horrible accumulation of gunk and was wondering what caused it when I
noticed a hole in the top of the intake about 3" long and less than an inch
wide. I asked the tech what had happened and he said the cats stopped
up(both of them!) and the gas trapped in the intake caught fire and melted
the intake! No damage to the engine cover but I'd hate to see the bill for
this one! Thankfully(for the owner) it's covered by warranty since the cats
caused the whole problem and they are warranted for 100k.
Dealer said they were told a bad run of cats got out some time back. FWIW.
