E36 wheels

Hi all,

I am looking for some new wheels for my 93 325, have called the tirerack 
and can't seem to get a straight answer
on what wheel size will fit my car.
I am looking at a 17 inch wheel in either 8.5 or 7.5,  width and I will be 
using a 235 40 17 tire for now.
I have been told that the 8.5,  42 offset,  wheel will not fit without 
modifications to my car, is this true? My car has been lowered with H&R 
springs and bilstein shocks. Also what advantage to I gain by using a wider 
wheel???
