94 740i SRS Light problem solved (I hope).

The story: 94 740i. About 6 weeks ago the SRS light comes on. My wife (it
is her car) takes it to her local mechanic. BMW specialist, have always had
nothing but the best service. He resets it for her for free, tells her that
it might have been spurious and that may fix it. A week and the light is
back on. She takes it back and they keep it for a day. They charge her
$134 and tell her the computer says the passenger air bag and the SRS sensor
need replacing. Parts and labor: over $2200.

She decides to get a second opinion and goes to the local dealer. Chaisson
in Las Vegas. He resets it and tells her that if she wants to leave it, for
a $70 fee they will hook it up and tell her what the computer says. He
tells her that he has never heard of a computer deciding that an air bag was
broken.

In an unrelated story line, the check engine light was finally also coming
on more and more. Our usual mechanic said $434 parts and labor. The dealer
said $400. There was one other BMW mechanic that advertises in our local
club newsletter, and they quoted her $309 for the O2 sensors replacement (it
has 2). She decides to let the new place do the O2, and while performing
that, he puts it on the computer and tells her that all SRS components check
fine, but that the battery is getting weak. He said that when a battery
starts to go, all kinds of gremlins can wreak havoc on the electrical
system.

So day before yesterday, she has him replace the battery ($109 parts and
labor) and so far, no SRS light.

Just my experience, YMMV,
Mike
