E34 Central locking problem

One of my E34s has started playing up by refusing to let me in.

The problem seems to be total power failure to the central locking circuit.
Even isolating the BMW fitted alarm with its own under bonnet key results in
....

The car will not lock or unlock but then after a couple of minutes all seems
well again?

I noticed also on one occasion at least I could not get in using the emergency
routine ( lift handle operate key beyond unlock) to open just the drivers door
(Euro car).  It appeared as if the relay (god knows which one.. so common god
tell me) was continuing to try and lock the car?

I have swapped the two yellow relays under the back seat for the ones in the
other E34 and the problem did not swap cars.  I have also swapped the video
cassette sized box in the forward position between cars and the problem did not
change.

As this is the car the other half drives its running up my mobile phone bill and
giving me ear ache.

Any ideas gurus?
