Wheel bearing replacement on my 325iX

It looks like the front wheel bearings on my '88 325iX have gone
south and need to be replaced.   I have a couple of questions around
replacing them:

Is the procedure any different on the iX as opposed to other E30 models?

Bentley claims you need a special BMW tool to replace the bearings.  Is this
true or can it be done without it?
