E28 sparkplug wire madness

I've been calling around for a set
of sparkplug wires, and I've been
quoted anywhere between $250-$400
for my 88 528e.

I thought $40 was stiff for my toyota,
but $400????!!!!

What gives?  are these made of gold?
I can put up with $100-$150/set, but
$200-400 is beyond reasonable...

Furthermore, my 528e was manufactured after
3/87, so these are more expensive than the 
ones before 3/87.  What's the story on this?

any suggestions?
