Bob,

I also had the stage 1 software installed in my '99 328is.  I could feel the
difference, I did not have a problem with the car being sluggish at all.  You
may want the install a new air intake to increase to flow of the system.  I
have the Dinan cold air intake, it makes a big difference and sounds great too.
