A couple of days ago I was locked out of my E28 when the drivers door double
locked on me. Fortunately for me I was able to unlock the rest of the doors
from either the trunk or the passenger door. The drivers door still would
not unlock and I could not lock the rest of the locks from the passenger
door.
Last night I was able to remove the door panel with the door locked shut.
Not as difficult as I had imagined. When I looked inside the door I saw that
the ring on the lock cylinder that the rod attaches to had broken off. The
mechanical linkage was now gone. There is a relay with an electrical contact
on top of it inside of the door. I was able to reach down and engage the
contact. That was it, the door unlocked almost scaring me.
I put the door panel back on since I don't have the broken part to replace
yet. I can now operate all of the locks from the trunk or passenger door and
best of all I can open the drivers door!
Many thanks to all who responded to my request for help. I would especially
like to thank Chris Pawlowicz for his E30/E28 central locking FAQ. It gives
a thorough look at the operation of the central locking system. It can be
