<E30> how do I remove the upper shifter lever?

I'm replacing the lower shifter lever on my '84 325e, and I need
to remove the upper lever to get the upper cup and clip assy off.
How do I get thet clip out that holds the washer and rubber piece
that holds the upper lever to the lower one?
