<All> Cleaning your engine

Some dumb schmuck left the oil filler cap off his E30 for a couple of
hundred miles, until the "low oil level" light came on and he discovered
his mistake.  Now his engine compartment is all grotty with oil and the
dust and dirt that stuck to it.  He is wary of steam-cleaning services
(should he be?) and wonders if there's some cleaner and/or technique he
could use to make messing around in the engine compartment less of a
filthy job than it has become.  Recommendations?
