<MISC> Dealership "Protective Coating" - a good idea?

Greetings to the list - I'm new here, but I've just bought my first car (the
323, with which I am thrilled). I'll skip any further personal introduction
for later, and get to my question.

When I picked up my new car, the dealer naturally had a list of extras he
wanted me to purchase. Some of them I jumped right for ("Floormats? Yes
please." "CD changer in the boot? No thanks.")

The one thing I'm struggling with, and wondering if I should go back for, is
the Exterior/Interior Protective Coating. I declined, because I remembered
someone somewhere telling me this is *the* classic car dealer scam. But I
really want to make sure this car looks as good as possible for as long as
possible, and starting to wonder if it would be worth it. I've only had the
car for a week, so it's not too late, but I'm just afraid of looking like a
chump. Does anyone have advice?

Thanks!
