O2 Sensor Question

Hi All,
I remember hearing a while back that an O2 sensor from
an '89 5 liter Mustang would work with my '87 325 (eta
motor). My car is at the garage now, and my mechanic
says the sensor costs $136 from BMW :( Has anybody out
there done this, and if so how were the results? I
hear the the sensor is only about $40 from Ford. TIA
