Fuel Vapor Odor

Model 528e 1984
Problem: Fuel Vapour odor around trunk and fill area. No visible leaks. 
Transfer pump has light buzzing sound. Fuel filter status unknown (just 
bought recently am changing filter tomorrow). Main fuel pump status 
unknown. Idle slightly rough with some flat spots on exceleration. Car has 
had recall update on emmissions rerouting of purgevalve from charcoal 
canister, however.....where is used to connect on the intake manifold is a 
thin plastic line that made its way under the driver side dash with an open 
half ball rubber end which I could not find any where to attach and viewed this 
as a vacumm leak and just plugged it at the manifold. Did this assist in 
pulling fumes (fuel vapour) and if so where?
