Eugene -
Gear failure is a probable cause of the odometer
failure. Some years ago, I tried to reset the trip
indicator on my Porsche's odometer while the car
was in motion. The gears jammed and the shaft
that drove them was pushed to one side. The
pot metal casting yielded and the gears disengaged.
I took the spedometer apart and installed a
brass "bushing" (it was more crude than that
name suggests, but it worked) to reengage
the gears. Doing that today is probably illegal.
