FYI: BMW Recall

BMW Recalls 280,000 3-Series Cars
Side Airbags Could Be Inadvertently Triggered

MUNICH, Germany (May 27) - German automobile maker BMW AG said on Thursday it
was recalling 280,000 cars from its 3-series model range introduced in April
last year for airbag modifications and brake checks.

The Munich-based car maker said side airbags in the cars could, in certain
circumstances, be inadvertently triggered. Airbag software would be modified
in the cars to prevent this, the company said.

The company said the cars in the 3-series range recalled to BMW dealerships
had been sold worldwide.

The airbags could accidentally inflate when a car was travelling on a poor
road surface or if the vehicle bumped heavily against a curb, BMW said.

The device's software would be changed free of charge for customers bringing
their cars to BMW dealers, the company said.

Checks would also be carried out in order to rule out a potential brake fault
in the 3-series saloons/sedans, the company added.

A safety clip around the connection linking the car's brake pedal and brake
booster could be loosened, depending on the extent and type of braking by a
driver, BMW said.

The clip had come loose, preventing the car's ability to brake, in only one
test, however, the company added.

The brake checks were being carried out to rule out any problems arising, the
company said.
