If the only thing you liked out of the M3 was the more powerful engine,
that's probably not going to be worth $20K.  The M3 is a much rougher
ride, and is geared more towards racing than daily driving.  Unless you
plan to do a lot of competitive driving soon, go with the 328i, and take
some of that extra $20K and get it turbocharged.  You'll have a friendlier
ride that you can live with every day, and pretty darned powerful engine
to boot.  Good luck!
