got some shakes?

on my '87 535i,  I notice a shaking at all speeds and it's pretty violent in 
3rd gear. The mechanic who looked over the car for me said it might be the 
drive shaft or the u-joints. I was curious if any of you had any experience 
with this sort of problem? Also I need to change all four tires on the car, 
would anybody recommend anything in particular? Thank you so much.
