What's in a shift knob???
Well, for those who think that a shift knob is strictly ornamental, I'm
writing to tell you that it just ain't so.
When Ben Liaw first came up with the idea of replacing the stock shift
level with one from an M Roadster, I was one of the first on line to
attend the initial shifterfest and be blessed. At the time, the upgrade
only consisted of a straight shift lever. I liked the short throw, but
was having a hard time with the shifter being out of place and the throw
being so much stiffer. Since that time, I have been bent and ERKed (I
know, sounds personal). These upgrades definitely made for a
substantial improvement in the overall feel. My shifting was now much
smoother and required less effort, but still I was looking for more.
After speaking with Ben and Rob, both suggested that I consider the Rob
Knob. I didn't think that an additional 7 oz. could make any
substantial difference, but was I ever wrong. I picked up my Polished
Aluminum Shift Knob at the last shifterfest, put it right on the car and
took it out for a test. AMEN!!!!, this was exactly what I needed.
Shifting is virtually effortless, with each throw being short and right
on the mark. The new knob not only performs terrific, but it looks
really sharp.
I have to admit that I was hesitant about removing my old shift knob. I
had a MOMO shadow (carbon Fiber) knob which was given to me by my
girlfriend, and I hated the idea of hurting her feelings by saying that
her knob was not as good as Rob's (you try telling that to your wife or
girlfriend). However, after replacing my shift knob, she couldn't help
but love the new look and feel. I now think that she is hooked on Rob's
knob (Damn you Rob).
If you have a short shift kit, are thinking of getting one, you really
should consider a heavier weight shift knob, it will make all the
difference.
Now if only I could get my hands on a Titanium Knob :-)
The usual applies. I am not nor have I ever been affiliated with UUC
Motorwerks. Just passing on what I hope might be some useful insight.
