<E34> M5.CD install

I own a 91, E34, M5 manufactured 1/90
I would like to install the Pioneer 6 CD Changer with factory brackets.
Is it true the factory had two locations for the CD Changers, with the
Pioneer mounted vertically in the fender area next to the power amplifier
and the Alpine unit is mounted under the package tray on the left side?
The bracket kit for the Alpine is $40 and the Pioneer brackets do not come
as a kit.  If you purchase the parts separately the total cost will exceed
$400.
Has anyone accomplished the vertical left side installation and broken the
bracket price barrier?
