E36 M3 Question

Why do I see so many E36 M3's with new engines? What gives? Is a low milage
earlier model likely to lunch it's engine? I've seen numerous posts about cars
which have already gone through an engine, and have seen at least 3 at the
local stealer undergoing major engine surgery...

Yet another BMW which in its first few years was basically still undergoing
R&D at the expense of the consumer? 

I have driven them and think it's a great car but why all the problems?
