Clutch/tranny noise...E30

When I push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor I hear a fairly loud 
squeak/scratching/grinding coming from the trans area.  Doesn't matter if 
the selector is in neutral or a gear.  When I let the pedal out a little 
but not enough to engage it, the noise reduces.  The pedal feel is also 
much stiffer than normal.  Is it the clutch or is it the trans that is 
causing this?  Any ideas?
