cylinder #1 (or #6?) sensor on E30

Hello,

I'm wondering what the cylinder #1 (or was it #6, I don't remeber) sensor on
my '88 325i E30 engine is used for. I read a couple of articles but did not
find the solution.
Car has Motronic 1.1 ...153 ECU
The ETM says that this sensor goes into the ECU.

Fact is that on my engine the sensor was not connected (due to a bad
replaced ignition wire).
The engine started normal, ran and accelerated normal (like it is for a 5cyl
engine - #6 had a burnt valve)

I'm going to rebuild the head and will install it with the ECU on my eta
engine.

Any help available
