<E30> Starter Problems?

Hello Everyone,
  Does anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting these symptoms on 
an 85 325e automatic with 116k: For a cold start, starter motor won't 
disengage from the engine after I release the key. I must turn off the 
engine, then start it again and problem is gone. Symptom doesn't happen 
any other time, only when car has been sitting 8 hours or more, any 
temperature.
  I'd sure appreciate any ideas and approximate number of hours to fix 
the problem.
