Paul:
This thread went around a few months ago. Long and short of it was
1)It was not exclusive to E36's and 2)It probably is input shaft
bearing noise and 3) Its normal, and not doing any damage.
Since your car is under warranty, wont hurt to mention it during
your next dealer visit. Never know..

PS..In general, before your car warranty runs out, make a last visit
to the dealer and specifically write down ANY noise, issue, or problem
you have experienced, even sporadically. Documenting this info can be
of GREAT assistance if the problem re-appears post-warranty.
