<e-30> dash replacement?

I have a e-30 325 (1987) with a couple of cracks in the top of the dash. I
have seen two methods to correct this problem. The first is the plastic
overlay. I installed one on a Triumph years ago and it looked fine. Has
anyone installed one on an e-30? What are your thoughts? How far down
does it cover?

Second question, I have seen a few people selling used dashes. How much
work is involved to remove and replace the dash. Is it a matter of ripping
the whole thing apart including the instrument cluster, hvac, etc.

Is there a third alternative I had not thought of?

Thank for your help!
