Subject: Re: <E30> Seeking Advice on Auto Trannies

Hello Mike. I can only give you my personal experience and pass on the
things I've heard. My wife's '91 325ic has an auto. It's ok. There's
a second or so delay off the line that kind of sucks. Shift points are
at a low (~2.5K) RPM and most of the engine's torque and horsies are at
4K+ range. Try to find one that has the sport/economy selector (little
dial on the center console). You can have more control over it as well
as electronically change the shift points.

As far as durability, the auto tranny is considered the "weak link" of
the BMW drive train. They are supposed to start having problems at
around 100-125K. Ours has 88K on it and no problems at this time. I've
read that yearly changing the fluid and filter greatly extends the life
of them, and I'm going to do that (w/ Redline) next month.

OTOH, my '89 iX has a 5-speed and I sure love it. It's scarry how much
more pull that car has at the higher revs. I imagine it'll have even
more after I put a Jim C Chip in:) A lot less "boring" to drive that
the iC, although the auto is great in traffic. Of course if I wanted a
commuter, I'd get a VW Golf TDI.

I guess it all comes down to what you want/need and, as you pointed out,
whats available. That's how my wife ended up with the slush box; just
couldn't find an iC with all the features/quality/care that we wanted
that also had a 5 speed. In conclusion (finally) I think you'd be happy
with eithe
