This invited comment, and I am trying to avoid work.
I have a V8 in my 95 Ford Thunderchicken (bird). It gets about the same
gas mileage as my 325ix, but the 325 would not tow my sailboat as well as
the Ford. Likewise the Ford is not nearly as fun to drive and it's the
pits on ice and snow. It's not the V8's in the SUV's but the way the
engine is configured and the weight of the car that causes the problems.
