<e32> transmission replacement

I have a buddy that has just replaced his tranny with a salvaged one.
Now his auto tranny will not do anything but drive in third gear.  He
doesn't seem to disturbed about driving it this way to work (23 miles)
and claims that 3600 rpms sounds quite nice.  He is puzzled and I would
like to help him.  I remember a while back about third gear being some
sort of default value when there is something else disconnected, broken,
or out of adjustment.

Any ideas?
