The pre-95 years E36 had tilt but not telescopic. After the 94 model
year, they had an issue with crash protection and they removed the tilt
option because of it. (They retrofitted the pre-95 models with some
additional components but the tilt still worked).
New models (E46) have both tilt and telescopic.
