Sanjay,
Get yourself a nice welding glove to put on while reaching between the hot
exhaust manifolds, (you are changing the oil hot right?), gives you all the
grip you need and protects your hand from hot iron and oil.

I've never (>50,000 Mi) tightened my filter with more than firm hand force and
have never had any problems. (Be sure to pre-lube the rubber gasket).
