The Nut That Holds the Steering Wheel

Not the driver, I mean the nut.  This question was buried in a post I
made a couple of weeks ago, but no one commented, so I repost it
separately.

The nut that holds the steering wheel on an E30 (22 mm head) is a
locking nut.  The Bentley manual says to replace it whenever the wheel
is removed.  I've removed and replaced lots of Bimmer steering wheels,
but I've never replaced the nut.  How critical is this?
