<E-30> M3 w/ a trashed engine

I saw an ad for an '88 M3 with an oil starved motor for $3,500.  I'm
kinda' interested in picking it up and putting a new engine in it. 
Anybody know how much a crate engine from BMW goes for?  Option 2: 
dismantlers like AAA SMall Car World might have one, but from previous
experience, places like that charge about as much new.  If the costs are
prohibitive, would it be possible to rebuild the engine or would it be
too FUBARed to rebuild?
