E28 clutch and tranny noise

Hello all,

Some time ago I told you about my M535i '86 project. It has been imported
from Germany and now I'm taking it totally apart and fixing / checking
everything and installing them on the my 520i 82' I rebuilt some years
ago. I am sure that there will raise some more questions as I get along
with this project but for starters heres a few mechanical challanges to
digest.

About the clutch. While the motor is lift off, I opened it and measured
the thichness for the clutch plate (SACHS 1861 931 033) to be 9.5 mm
(0.3740"). Will this do for long? How thich is a new one?

Another problem is with the Getrag gearbox. It makes noise when the
running it in neutral (and low gears) but if I press the clutch the noise
stops as the shafts stop from turning. Some people say it is the main
axle bearing. If I try to wigle the main axle I can feel a small
torerance which indicated that the front bearing has worn out.

But the question is what else? Is it common to have only front bearing
brake down (@ 197'000 km)? Can it be changed without taking the box
apart? Or is it worth taking everything apart?

Hope that someone has the time and knowledge to help me here. Thank you
in advance.
