89 325iS Temp Guage Scare

On my 325, first thing in the morning, the Temp guage rests on it's lower stop
(blue end) until i give the cluster a little tap, or until the car warms quite
a bit (warms or vibrates?).

Also, when driving (after warm up) the thing will suddenly jerk almost all the
way to the red (somewhat disconcerting, "oh dear by the way the BMR ran in the
red all the way home...is that bad?")...but will return to normal if the
cluster is again given a loving little tap..
Just loose connections? Symptoms of some deeper evil?
